Initiatives at Harumi Middle School

Experiencing goalball
On April 2nd, we held a session to experience goalball (a sport designed specifically for athletes with a vision impairment) in collaboration with the Paralympic Committee of Australia. 16 student volunteers learned about the rules and technique of goalball, and enjoyed a session of the game.

Experiencing para table tennis
On July 30th, we invited the Australian national team and staff of para table tennis to our school. 10 students volunteered to interact with the team by challenging how many rallies they could complete, and by practicing under tournament rules.

Exchange students
In the summer, 24 student representatives from the district visit Australia for foreign experience studies. During the stay, students communicated the beauties of Japanese culture, and had a first-hand encounter of the culture, history, and nature of Australia. After the experience, students presented their findings during the school’s cultural festival, sharing stories of their great experiences. In the 2nd semester, each of the 4 schools in the district welcomed exchange students from Australia. The exchange students joined the classes to experience Japanese education and was invited to English classes as guest teachers. They also experienced Japanese culture by practicing traditional calligraphy, performing tea ceremony, and dressing in yukata.

Facility usage during the Paralympics
For the duration of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games (August 18th – September 9th), our school’s gymnasium, martial arts room, and special classrooms will be opened for the Australian National Team as a lounge space to interact with families and friends. There, our school’s student council members and students who went abroad will lead the management of community spaces. They are planning to have performances by the school brass band, and areas to experience Japanese tea ceremony, ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement), traditional calligraphy, and yukata dressing. We strive to welcome our guests with warmth and grace.
